Office workers will come into contact with 832 individuals across their working lives and yet will make long-term friends of only five, according to a study.
Of the 832, the average office employee will meet only half, the rest being at the end of a phone or an e-mail. But out of the 400 or so with whom there is face-to-face contact, only 40 will be remembered later in life.
Of all the people they get to work with, two will be dates, five true friends, and at least five will be work colleagues at more than one job, the report for recruitment consultancy Office Angels said. The average worker will get the same boss more than once as he or she moves from firm to firm, often because managers poach their best employees when they change jobs.
At least one former colleague is likely to become a future boss, meaning that I pays to be nice to all 832 colleagues that office staff are likely to encounter.
